WEIRD: A Street Sign Warning for "Drunk Pedestrians"
Updated: 03/11 15:40 Pecica, RomaniaDrive through any college area or famous bar area on a Friday/Saturday night and you will find plenty of drunk pedestrians. Though I agree that walking is far better option for drunk people than driving, but they are still a threat to someone driving on the road.
Officials in Pecica (Romanian village town near Hungary) have found the answer. They have installed 10 road signs around popular nightspot areas in the town. The signs are bright red in color which show a person crawling on their knees while clutching a glass in one hand with the Romanian phrase "Cetateni Turmentati" (in English - “Attention - Drunks”) under it.
The mayor of the town, Peter Antal, got his inspiration from a town in Germany which installed similar signs.
He said officials took action after a “despairing” number of accidents in the town, which has a population of about 13,000, caused by drunken revellers, with some even resulting in fatalities.
He said it was not motorists’ fault but blamed the town’s pedestrians, many of whom were not able to look out for themselves as they walked around the town, which is more than 300 miles west of the Romanian capital Bucharest.
"We are a border town and have lots of cars thundering through here all the time," he told local media.
"But we also have a very vibrant nightlife and the two don't mix.
“We have to target the drivers because by the time they get to this state, the pedestrians are beyond caring.”
He added: “In recent years… some traffic accidents (have) resulted, in some cases, even with deceased (people).
“We have thought about different options (on how) we can stop this and we decided that first step was to mount these signs.
“We must warn drivers that sometimes people who have little control over their actions can suddenly appear in the road.”

I wonder the effectiveness of these signs. Does it mean that you yield if you see a drunk pedestrian? And how do you distinguish between a drunk and sobre one?
Would you like them installed in your city?

WEIRD: Pregnant woman beats up husband for falling asleep on the couch when he was supposed to take the dogs out
Updated: 03/10 15:19 Brooksville, FloridaMen are very well known for procrastinating and it is normal for the wife to get irritated and angry for the behaviour but 25-year old Jennifer Diservio took the matter a little too seriously and beat her husband, 42-year old Thomas Diservio, back and blue after he forgot to take the dogs out and fell asleep on the couch.
The incident happened in the living room of the couple's trailer, which is located on the north side of Fort Dade Avenue in Brooksville.
Thomas Diservio, 42, told deputies his wife became "irate" after he fell asleep on the couch when he was supposed to take the dogs out, according to the incident report.
At that point, Diservio said his wife hit him on the mouth and pulled at his t-shirt. Deputies say Jennifer Diservio, 25, is six months pregnant, suffers from bipolar disorder and had not been taking medication.
Jennifer Diservio was taken to the Hernando County jail, charged with felony domestic battery and held without bond.
Deputies say Diservio has "numerous prior convictions for battery and domestic battery," according to the incident report.

WEIRD: Extreme Mid-Life Crisis: Man chops off "virgin" wife's head because she refused to have children after 21 years of marriage
Updated: 03/08 19:57 FrancePhilippe Cousin, 53, has been married to Nicole Cousin, 47, for 21 years but they had never had sex due to Nicole's fear that she would pass on her father’s multiple sclerosis through his genes. Philippe had started realizing that he would be 50 soon without any kids of his own. The whole issue has caused lot of stress build up in his head and during a domestic dispute between the two, he picked up a kitchen knife and chopped off his wife's head.
On April 16th 2007, Cousin telephoned his local police station in Arras, northern France, and told an officer: ‘Excuse me for disturbing you, I’ve killed my wife.’
In a fit of rage following a domestic argument, he had taken a kitchen knife to her neck before slicing her head off.
This morning he appeared before a judge at the Pas-de-Calais assizes at Saint-Omer, near Calais, facing life in prison for murder.
He denies the charge, pleading diminished responsibility, but faces life in prison.
The court heard how Cousins also told police: ‘I’m sorry for the work which I’ ve given you.
'My wife shouted my name out, I decapitated her. You realise that, and I’m not mad!’
While on remand he said his wife’s inability to have children lay at the heart of the couple’s domestic difficulties.
She feared that she would pass on her father’s multiple sclerosis through his genes, the court heard.
This meant that every time he tried to have sex he was rebuffed. An autopsy confirmed that Mrs Cousins was indeed a virgin when she died, even though she married aged 21.
Defending barrister Didier Robiquet said that the problems came to a head two weeks before Cousin’s 50th birthday in what was described as ‘pressure cooker’ syndrome.
‘His wife had threatened to leave him but he had never undergone any psychiatric treatment because of this,’ said Mr Robiquet.
‘He had been hugely frustrated over more than twenty years and this built up into a terrifying repressed aggression which finally exploded. He did not feel he was completely in control of his actions.’Source: www.dailymail.co.uk
The whole idea of being married and not having any sex sounds strange to me, but it makes me believe that Philippe must have known about this problem before the marriage and quite possibly agreed to the arrangement. Further, If it was such a big deal for him, why didn't he leave her?

WORLD: PETA: Castrate the polar bear to prevent incest
Updated: 03/04 14:49 Berlin, GermanyGerman chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has requested for Germany's favorite polar bear, Knut the polar bear who shot to global stardom as a cub in 2007, to be castrated to avoid him mating with his cousin Giovanna.
“Knut fans should be aware that only Knut’s castration would allow a long-term cohabitation of Giovanna and Knut. All other hopes and desires would bring the polar bear population in captivity to its pre-programmed demise even more rapidly,” said a PETA spokesman, as reported in Der Spiegel. Source: www.vanityfair.com
Giovanna, known as Gianna for short, has the same grandfather as Knut.
The zoo experts claims that mating between the two would lead to incest depression.
Any offspring would threaten the genetic diversity of the polar bear population in Germany and risk exposing the bear couple to a condition known as "incest depression", he said.
"Knut fans need to know that only Knut's castration would allow a long life together with Giovanna," Albrecht said in a statement.
Gianna was placed with the strapping Knut in Berlin due to construction work on her own den in Munich. After chilly introductions, the two have grown quite close.

I don't know about you guys, but I think PETA seems to be crossing the line when they want the animals want to act according to their ethics.
What do you guys say? Is it OK to castrate the polar bear or not?

WEIRD: DC Couple gets a surprise FEDEX delivery of a box full of Marijuana worth $120,000
Updated: 02/28 15:03 Washington Dc, USADC Couple, Eric Anderson, 47, and Melanie Sloan, 44, got the surprise of their lives when they found that the FEDEX truck had left them a box full of Marijuana which was worth $120,000.
Melanie Sloan, a former prosecutor and works for the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, found the package on her front porch.
"I noticed that the package was ours but the name on the box wasn't and it was shipping center return address in Anaheim, California. So I thought that was strange," says Sloan.
Still she thought it could be for a neighbor or even a gift for their 11-month-old baby girl. So they decided to open it. Inside the box was another box wrapped with insulation.
"It's layer upon layer of tightly wrapped plastic wrap. And it looks like there is dirt on the inside of that. So my husband pokes through the plastic wrap and touches it and he said it's not dirt its coffee grounds. Then I did know what it was. I knew it would be drugs," says Sloan.Source: www.foxnews.com
Interestingly, this might not be a fluke by the dealer but an intentional act. It seems to be the new thing to take delivery for pot - get it mailed it to an address where there is no one during the day and pick it up before they arrive. Interestingly, it didn't work this time.
In the summer of 2008 - a swat team busted through the Mayor Calvo's front door, shot and killed his dogs and interrogated him for hours. Calvo was found to be an innocent victim in an all too familiar game.Source: www.foxnews.com
Seems like a pot-head was sending it to another pot-head using an idea from a pot-head!

WORLD: Glenn Beck loses 116 sponsors in UK; 6th day without advertisements
Updated: 02/17 20:14 UK, USAFox News host Glenn Beck lost 116 sponsors till date as there were no advertisements during UK broadcast of his TV show.
Press Release from colorsofChange -
The U.K. broadcast of Glenn Beck's eponymous television program was forced to air free of paid advertisements on four consecutive days last week. This according to StopBeck.com, an extension of the anti-Beck campaign created by ColorOfChange.org. StopBeck.com confirmed that, with the latest group of defections from Beck's overseas broadcast, Fox News Channel was forced to fill commercial breaks with news headlines and local weather updates from its U.K.-based sister network, Sky News, instead of paid advertisements.
The news comes on the heels of a new group of U.S. companies who have asked Fox News Channel to stop their ads from running or pledged not to run ads on the show going forward. The latest U.S. defections -- Allstate Insurance, Anheuser-Busch, Best Western International, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (maker of Flomax), Brother International Corporation, Hear Music, Idaho Potato Commission, Intersections Inc., Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, Marriott International, Nestlé USA, Republic of Macedonia, Starkist Co., United Healthcare, USFidelis, Volkswagen and Western Union -- coupled with the international movement to bring the total number of companies distancing themselves from Beck to over one hundred.
"We're incredibly thrilled that StopBeck.com has taken our campaign and successfully executed it internationally," said James Rucker, Executive Director of ColorOfChange.org. "This is a huge blow against Glenn Beck. As we continue our fight against those that support Beck domestically, we will use this victory as further proof that more and more companies are taking a stand against his racial demagoguery."
"People now on both sides of the Atlantic are using Twitter and other social media to let companies know that by advertising on Beck's program, they are subsidizing hate," said Angelo S. Carusone, lead organizer of StopBeck.com. "Fox News' willingness to use filler from Sky News, rather than address Beck's fear mongering, raises real questions about the network's priorities."

Even here in US, sponsors seem to be backing out of Glenn Beck's show. ColorofChange.org shared the following as the comments they got from US sponsors.
"While we do purchase advertising on Fox News Channel, we did not intentionally purchase commercials in or around the show, 'The Glen [sic] Beck Program,' nor do we sponsor the program," said Jennifer L. Egeland, director of integrated marketing communications for Allstate Insurance Company, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "You should not expect to see Allstate advertising during this program in the future."
"Our company has not agreed to advertise during the Glenn Beck show," said Johnny Furr, vice president of community affairs for Anheuser-Busch, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "We purchase advertising on the Fox News Channel for time slots other than this show, and the ad you saw inadvertently ran during that program."
"Best Western ads will no longer run during the Glenn Beck show," said Troy Rutman, director of external communications for Best Western International, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "As a global, family-oriented brand with guests of all persuasions and viewpoints, we seek to avoid any controversial programming, regardless of political affiliation."
"Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. does not intend to advertise during the Glen [sic] Beck Show and has communicated this to the FOX network," said Susan Holz, Senior PR Specialist for the company, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.
"Moving forward, Brother won't have it on there [Beck's show]," said Peggy Carlton, account executive for Brother International at MS&L Worldwide, in a voice mail message to ColorOfChange.org. "Moving forward there won't be any specifically on Glenn Beck."
"We in no way want to promote the hateful rhetoric of Mr. Glenn Beck, and therefore take this matter very seriously," said Dino Balzano, director of advertising at Concord Music Group, parent company of Hear Music, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "Although we did not specifically request the airing to take place on that show, we did buy time on Fox News, and the spot happened to air during Beck's program. After we were made aware of the situation, we made the immediate decision to insist all further of our scheduled Fox airings were not on Glenn Beck."
"It has been our long-standing policy to not advertise on any controversial programs," said Frank Muir, President & CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "We have informed FOX that the Idaho Potato Commission will no longer advertise on the Glen [sic] Beck Show."
"I first learned about this controversy [in November] and asked Fox to take his show out of our rotation," said Steve Schwartz, executive vice president of consumer services for Intersections, Inc., in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "We no longer advertise on Glenn Beck's show."
Angela Loiacono, manager of corporate communications at Career Education Corporation (CEC), parent company of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, confirmed that CEC had asked Fox News not to allow its ads to run during Glenn Beck's program. "Our commercials...should be off-air in mid-February," said Loiacono in an email to ColorOfChange.org.
"We do not intend to have any additional ad placements during the program," said Jeff Flaherty, spokesperson for Marriott International, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "I'd like to point out that diversity and inclusion are core values at Marriott and an essential component of our success."
"We do not advertise on the Glenn Beck radio or television show," said Cathy Johnson, consumer services manager for Nestle USA, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "Nestlé USA has family friendly programming guidelines in place that are routinely monitored and enforced. However, we are aware of a recent commercial that aired during the Glenn Beck show. Airing the spot on FOX and this program was an error that has been corrected."
"Although we only have a few more spots left to air on Fox, we have requested that the remaining spots not be aired during Glenn Beck's program," said Natali Rancevic, a spokesperson for the Republic of Macedonia, Agency of Foreign Investments, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "Fox has agreed to honor our request."
"We have chosen to not air our commercial during Glenn Beck's program going forward given a number of alternatives that meet our advertising plan's criteria," said Mary Sestric, a corporate affairs staffer for Starkist Co., in an email to ColorOfChange.org.
"Back in August of this year United Healthcare instructed FOX News to not run any of our ads during the Glenn Beck show," said Lynne High, director of media relations, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.
"We are no longer advertising on this show or station," said Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, marketing coordinator for US Fidelis, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "Thank you for bringing this to our attention."

ARTS: Kevin Smith is too big to fly on Southwest Airlines
Updated: 02/15 16:20 USAThe "Clerks," "Mallrats" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" Director Kevin Smith was ejected by the pilot of a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland, California to Burbank, California because he was too big to fit in one seat.
On his Twitter account, Kevin wrote -
"I'm way fat, but I'm not there just yet."
Southwest Airlines replied with its own aplogies -
We would like to echo our tweets and again offer our heartfelt apologies to you. Our pilots are responsible for the safety and comfort of all customers on the aircraft and therefore, made the determination that Mr Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight."
Kevin insisted that he wasn't that fat. He could put both armrests down and buckle his seat belt.
He challenged the airline to bring a row of seats on to a US chat show for him to prove he fit into them.
"If I don't fit, I'll donate $10k (£6,380) to charity of your choice. But when I do (& buckle the belt as well)? 1) You admit you lied. 2) Change your policy, or at least re-train your staff to be a lot more human & a lot less corporate," he wrote.

Though I seriously doubt that he will fit into the chair. Kevin, you make enough money, why not buy two seats or hire a personal trainer?

ARTS: British fashion icon Alexander McQueen commits suicide days after his mother's death
Updated: 02/11 16:01 London, UKBritish fashion icon Alexander McQueen, 40, committed suicide at his luxury flat in Mayfair, central London. He is believed to have hanged himself. Just few days ago, his beloved mother Joyce died. It is reported that he took her death very badly. He was openly gay and had married his partner, film-maker George Forsyth in 2000 on a yacht owned by the prince of Gambia in Ibiza.
His design company said in a statement: 'On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home.
'At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family.
'Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.'

His twitter posts did point to his problems on coping with his mother's death.
On February 3rd, he wrote: 'I'm letting my followers know the my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...
Moments later, he added: 'But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

TECH: Local Anesthesia to stop pain without affecting motor functions
Updated: 02/10 16:33 Boston, Massachusetts, USAAnyone who has gone through or plans to go through the pains of child labor will appreciate the new discovery.
Local anesthetics of today not only stop or numb the pain but also affect the motor function of a human body. One of the most sought after discovery of the times has been to find a local anesthetic that only stops the pain without causing any change in the motor fucntions. Finally, researchers at Children's Hospital Boston have discovered just the local anesthetic that works for rats and hopefully will also work for humans.
The researchers, led by Daniel Kohane, MD, PhD, of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Children's, originally sought only to find an agent that would prolong the anesthetics' effects. They focused on surfactants, a subclass of so-called "chemical permeability enhancers" that enable drugs to spread more easily throughout a tissue.
In testing three kinds of surfactant along with the anesthetics QX-314 and QX-222 (both derivatives of lidocaine), they found that this approach did prolong the sensory block in rats' sciatic nerves, for up to 7 hours or more depending on the surfactant, but didn't prolong motor impairment; in some cases the motor block was absent or of very short duration. In the rats, this meant they were able to tolerate having their paws on a hot plate for long periods, yet still able to balance and bear weight on their legs.
"This was a surprise finding," says Kohane, who also directs the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery (LBDD) at Children's. "What we've discovered really is a new approach; the question now is to out the mechanism by which it works and look at the effects of other chemical permeability enhancers."
Kohane speculates that surfactant made the anesthetic better able to penetrate sensory nerves, which have little or none of the fatty coating known as myelin, whereas in motor neurons, which have abundant myelin, the active drug gets trapped in the myelin, never entering the nerve itself.
The lab's next steps will be to explore the effects of different permeability enhancers and examine their safety, since at high doses the drug combination could potentially be toxic to the nerves. The eventual plan is to test the approach in larger animals.
A parallel approach to achieving a pain-specific nerve block was proposed in 2007 by Clifford Woolf, MD, PhD, recently appointed director of the Children's Hospital Boston Program in Neurobiology. Woolf's team combined QXT-314 with capsaicin, which opens cellular gates that are only present in sensory neurons, and achieved pain-specific blocks in rats lasting 2 hours or more.
The new study was funded by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences. Itay Sagie, a research associate at the LBDD was the paper's first author.
Source: www.sciencedaily.com
In plain words it can be used for the following -
- Child birth procedures, where the anesthetic will stop the pain of child labor but the mother would still be able to push the baby out.
- Muscular and musculoskeletal problems where mobility is important.
- Any procedure that requires the body movement by the patient which would normally cause a lot of pain.
Great discovery!
